What to ask a video editor before you hire them for your family footage

Why this decision needs more than a price check

Most people shopping for help with family video only compare price and turnaround time. Those matter, but they will not tell you whether the person you hire understands what you actually want: a short, watchable film, not a highlight reel stitched together from whatever clips you handed over. The right questions upfront save you from a finished product that technically works but never gets watched twice.

Ask what their process looks like before they touch your footage

A good editor has a repeatable process. They will ask you what the footage is for, who will watch it, and how long you want it to run. If someone jumps straight to “send me everything and I’ll figure it out,” that is a warning sign. Editing without a plan usually produces something long, unfocused, and hard to sit through.

Ask them to walk you through their steps in plain language:

    • How they review and sort raw clips
    • How they decide what to cut
    • How they choose music and pacing
    • How many rounds of revisions are included

If they cannot answer clearly, they probably do not have a process. They just have software.

Ask how they handle footage that is not great

Family footage is rarely shot with a plan. It is shaky, badly lit, and full of dead air between the good moments. Ask directly: “What do you do with footage that is not usable?” A skilled editor should have a real answer, whether that means cutting it entirely, stabilizing it, or using it for a few seconds of texture rather than a full scene.

This is also where hobbyist editors reveal themselves. Someone who edits as a personal passion project, documenting their own family’s trips and milestones, often has a better instinct for this than someone who only edits commercial work. They have sat through hours of their own shaky footage and learned what earns a place in the final cut and what gets left out.

Ask what they need from you, and when

Before you hire anyone, get a clear list of what they expect you to provide. This usually includes:

    • The raw footage, in whatever format your camera or phone produces
    • Any photos you want mixed in
    • A rough idea of the story or timeline (a trip, a birthday, a year in review)
    • Music preferences, if you have any
    • A deadline, if the video is for an event

If an editor does not ask for this information, that usually means they will guess. Guessing produces generic results.

Ask about length and pacing philosophy

This is the question most people skip, and it matters most. Ask: “How long do you think this should run, and why?” A thoughtful editor will have an opinion, not just a default. Ten minutes of unbroken footage from a week-long trip is exhausting to watch. Two minutes that capture the feeling of the trip is something people will actually replay.

Greg Wasz, who runs Greg Wasz Productions as a personal video project focused on family travel and milestones, has talked about this exact tension: raw footage tells you everything, but a good edit tells you what matters. That instinct, knowing what to leave out, is harder to teach than software skills.

Ask how they price the work

Get a clear answer on whether pricing is flat, hourly, or based on final run time. Ask what triggers extra charges: additional footage, a second round of revisions, rush delivery. Vague pricing conversations early on usually turn into vague invoices later.

Ask to see something similar to what you want

Do not ask for a general reel. Ask for an example close to your situation: a trip video, a birthday montage, a multi-year compilation. Watching someone’s best work in a similar format tells you more than any conversation about their approach or their gear.

A short list before you commit

Before hiring anyone for this kind of project, you should be able to answer:

    • Do they have a clear editing process, or just tools
    • Do they have a plan for weak footage
    • Do they know what they need from you and when
    • Do they have a real opinion on length and pacing
    • Is the pricing structure clear
    • Have you seen something comparable to what you’re asking for

If you can answer yes to most of these, you are far more likely to end up with a video your family will actually want to watch again.
